The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of jobs created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
