Seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist group face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the group was behind attacks on sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
